So I recently came across a really badass milsim marker and felt I should share this with everyone.

The SAR-12 paintball sniper rifle from Carmatech Engineering is effectively the epitome of what a milsim marker should strive for.

As a sniper rifle it has all of your commonly expected features such as a longer barrel, rifle scope and stock with adjustable shoulder and cheek rests, and these are just the features of a prototype model.

Where the SAR-12 really shines is in the two patent-pending features unique to it.

The SAR-12 has a proprietary bolt system designed to function as either a bolt-action paintball sniper rifle, or in 2 minutes it can be converted to a air-tank-in-stock semi-auto paintball rifle.

The SAR-12 also has a proprietary symmetric magazine design. It has 2 channels that can hold 6 regular .68 paintballs or 6 First Strike rounds. You can then pull the magazine out, flip it around and slide it back in to access channel A or channel B.

I have to admit, that I’m pretty psyched for this paintball marker, which is slated for a release Sept of this year.

For those who cannot wait, there is a beta program in which you can purchase a beta model at MSRP $999 and when the beta is over you get full ownership of your SAR-12 beta model, with freedom to sell.

For more details you can go to the official SAR-12 website. You can also watch the demo video below.

Oi,

So, I change phones almost as much as I change underwear, and I change underwear almost as much as I change ROM’s on my HTC Desire.

The last couple months, I’ve been enjoying some modded Gingerbread releases from the XDA-Developers community, including AdamG’s Oxygen 2.0. Decided to get off my ass and reinstate the ext3 partition I had on my 16gb memory card before some prick stole that and my other goodies from my phone.

So, I set that up, but this time decided to swap to a new ROM again, and went with GINGERVillain 1.4. It’s a Gingerbread ROM, v2.3.3 and packs the 2.6.37.2 kernel with some defrost mods and shit streamed into it.

Gotta admit, the first 24 hours are impressive. Thus far, battery life is significantly better than the Oxygen 2.0 ROM, which is surprising since Oxygen was supposed to be a clean-cut ROM.

It’s st ill running fast and smooth, which isn’t saying a lot for long-term use, but is a plus for initial impressions.

A major personal consideration is the accuracy of the GPS, which is often times effected by settings implemented in the Radio. Although the original HTC radio for the Desire has been the most accurate to date, GINGERVillain does manage to pull off accuracy only 1-2 meters off from the stock radio, while still maintaining reasonable power usage. This is a win on both fronts, in my eyes.

Other than that, there is a custom app called Villain Setup that allows a user to implement the installation of mods, alternative kernels, and set the default installation location (internal or external;Bare in mind, with CyanogenMod Settings available in the default settings, this is slightly redundant).

All-in-all, perhaps not a perfect ROM for everyone, but certainly not a disappointment to this Fandroid, whom is a frequent changer of ROMS.

Hey guys, bringing you another no bullshit review.

Today’s movie of choice: The Green Hornet

Read on to find out if this movie was well brushed, or rotten from the inside out.

The Green Hornet, starring the annoying-as-fuck Seth Rogen, and the next closest thing to Bruce Lee since Jet Li’s younger years: Jay Chou.

Here’s my take on this thing. In the original, Green Hornet and his sidekick Kato were like an anti-hero. They took down criminals, but acted a lot like those criminals to convince the bad guys that they were heartless pricks which would avoid the chance of people they care about being used against them. This premise is carried forward into the new movie, but gets a bit twisted in this contemporary remake.

Firstly: Seth Rogen, and even his portrayal of Britt Reid, couldn’t possibly have to worry about people he cares about being used against him, since he’s a complete and absolute childish little ass that no one even cares about anyway. Granted, his father was a douche to him all his life, but that doesn’t give him carte blanche to treat everyone around him the same or worse.

I honestly have not had that much opportunity to sit and watch the classic series with Van Williams and Bruce Lee. Nor have I spent a bunch of time reading the original comics. I do remember growing up hearing and reading about classic series such as The Green hornet , and buried somewhere in my plethora of books I have a rather large one that talks about classics such as that, The Lone Ranger, and Buck Rogers. Never ONCE have I ever seen or read anything that suggested Britt Reid was a douche. A partier, yes. So in watching the movie I feel that it was either an asinine idea by Seth Rogen, or someone effecting the script got this great idea to build him into an ass, only to give merit to a few really ridiculous ideas for the story progression.

This is just one among several painful things they did that really shit all over the memory of a great hero.

What did they do right in the movie?

1) Hiring Jay Chou to play Kato.

The kid has talent , and really brought forth the spirit of Bruce Lee, with a REASONABLE amount of modern flavour.

2) The Black Beauty.

The car was great. The lights, the badge, the toys. It really WAS the Black Beauty.

3) The Gun.

They didn’t bring out both guns, but one of the Green Hornet’s trademark weapons was the gun that fired knockout gas. They modernized some of its concepts, but essentially kept it the same. I do wish they would have had the Hornet’s Sting as well though. Conceptually, it was essentially a taser.

4) The Costumes.

Although the costumes more so embody the second Green Hornet’s costumes, used in the 1960′s television show, they are also the most memorable due to their exposure to the mass media. The only thing missing that should have been included was the Hornet ‘s emblem on the forehead portion of his mask.

Now here’s the painful part . What they did wrong.

1) The story.

Frankly, the story is quite atrocious. Scanlon as the bad guy? Nuh-uh. He was both an affiliate and ally to Britt Reid AND the Green Hornet, and was aware they were on and the same.

2) Dan Reid didn’t die.

He retired, leaving the family business to his son, Britt. The movie solidly shit on this whole concept.

3) Green Hornet back story.

This one is a bit wide-spread. See, you DON’T fuck with a heroes origin story. Green Hornet was named thusly because of the car. When Britt and Kato used the car to try to spy on a local mobster and gather evidence, they got stuck in the middle of a gun fight . The car was seen there and became attached to the criminal nature of the incident. Britt and Kato developed the Green Hornet persona, naming it such because of the noise the car made when they were escaping. This developed a character Britt could portray in order to have access to the criminal underground.

4) Seth Rogen.

I needn’t say more, but I will. Ben Affleck or Matt Damon would have been more socially accepted actors to play this part. And nobody even likes them playing heroes. Ya know who would have knocked this role outta the park? Brendan Routh. He’s a natural hero, and carries the right attitude for this character. Seth Rogen couldn’t act his way out of a fake wet paper bag.

5) The Writers.

Who wrote this shit? Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. These two have worked together on supposedly “hilarious” projects as Superbad, Pineapple Express, and Da Ali G Show. Granted, those works might be funny to the mind-numbed masses of the world, and possibly even some beyond that classification, but in what fucking universe do those projects qualify these two peanut brained chimps to write the story for a movie based on such a classic character as The Green FUCKING Hornet!?!?!?!

It’s a rhetorical question, by the way, because no universe can qualify these idiots for this job. Therefore, the idiot who hired them should have his ass lit on fire and canned. Than, while everyone is laughing at his misfortune, shoot him with a double-barrel Desert Eagle square in the eyes, and piss on his corpse, which has officially become more useful in death as fertilizer.

My Final Scoring is:

Hell, let me save you the trouble and say: Don’t . Go. See. This. Movie.

Unless you’re a mind-numbed member of the idiot masses of this world, in which case. pile into the theatre so we can take
you and this movie out with one big fire.

So here’s the deal people. Unlike my blatant use of a Family Guy meme in the title, not everyone seeks to plagiarise, copy, or otherwise imitate previous events or stories intentionally.

Sometimes, this shit just happens…

The thing is, originality finally left town with the first Matrix movie, and since then we’ve been stuck with “Been There, Done That” and “Didn’t That Happen In Real Life?”. Let me tell ya guys, this shit ain’t likely to change for a while.

We are a linear species. We think in a straight line and we live in a straight line. This limits our ability to truly and absolutely step outside the box. Not that it helps us any that the box is filled with millions of creative ideas that have been done, redone, revamped, renewed, relived, and remastered. It also doesn’t help that primary events in human history tend to be seen as a focal point for major ideas that don’t really relate.

Here’s where my problem lies: I went to see Tron Legacy last Saturday, and after stepping out of the movie having thoroughly enjoying myself, I got to listen to someone rant about how every idea in the movie was taken from something else. The irony is, the claims were either off base because of too many variations, or off base simply because their choice of reference to what was being duplicated was in itself as much a copy as Tron Legacy had itself done.

Calling Kevin Flynn’s reprogramming of one of CLU’s guards a “These are not the droids you are looking for” ripoff really doesn’t fly, when that iconic Star Wars moment can just as easily be compared to some smooth talking from Humphrey Boghart in previous decades.

Frankly, trying to compare CLU to Hitler is just silly. Firstly, Hitler was human with free will, CLU only had his programming to fall back on. As Kevin Flynn put it : “Free will man! Ya can’t program that.” Secondly, if you think Hitler is the first asshole with a complex to go rampaging through the countryside with an army and a need to “purge” people, than you’re setting your historical sight’s a bit short.

And ya know what , don’t fuckin’ pull that “did ya see that god moment with Flynn?” bullshit. Lets see, he’s a user who created a unique environment, wherein a NEW species evolved on its own. If someone was trying to play the “God angle”, I’m pretty ure evolution would have been left out.

So, ya know what people, next time you want to accuse someone of stealing an idea or copying history, get your fucking facts straight, and think about what you’re accusing them of next time you have a creative idea. $5 says your idea won’t be as original as ya might think.

Hey Everyone.

So today, I’m bringing a review and first impressions of the mini-series for Transformers Prime to the pages of HackTooth.com.

This mini-series is intended to be a prelude to the full launch of the series in February 2011, so now is as good a t ime as any to decide if it is for you.

I’d like to start by addressing the various aspects of the characters and their vocal talents, as these are make-or-break factors of the series.

Arcee and Cliffjumper:

With the start of the first episode, we’re introduced to two Autobots right off the hop, and I’m definitely not displeased with the choices, as they’re what I might class as Tier 2 and 3 Autobots for popularity (Tier 1 being characters like Optimus and Bumblebee). These first two are Arcee and Cliffjumper, whom are voiced by Sumalee Montano and Dwayne Johnson, respectively. Dwayne certainly knows what he’s cookin’ with a solid portrayal of Cliffjumper, and Sumalee Montano shows that her diverse and less-than-familiar previous work isn’t for lack of vocal talent, bringing a more tough approach to Arcee. Visually, the characters feel more traditional to me, although Arcee does bridge the gap between the original series and some more recent shows for design.

Decepticon Drones:

We get an introduction to Decepticon “drones” next , which are your typical cookie-cutter bad guys, except they periodically show they’re not entirely stupid or useless.

Starscream and Soundwave:

The drones bridge the gap to introduce Starscream, or ” ‘Scream’ ” as Cliffjumper refers to him, and a few moments later, Soundwave. Starscream’s character is a bit more like the characters from Energon, in that he’s more sharp edges and such. My only issue with this, is that he looks really scrawny, which is awkward to feel like you’re looking at Starscream. Starscream’s voice was the only one I actually felt uncomfortable listening to. He is voiced by Steve Blum, who is an extremely well versed voice actor. He’s voiced characters like Keisuke Takahashi in Initial D, Spike in Cowboy Bebop, Orochimaru in Naruto, and Vincent Valentine in FF: Advent Children. With titles like those under his belt , he’s definitely in the super-heavyweight category for voice acting, but he doesn’t sound right Starscream. Fortunately, Soundwave never made a peep during the show through his own voice, so my only real complaint about him is that he looks like an awkwardly designed Rumble, with something of a LCD screen for a face.

Optimus, Bumblebee, Bulkhead and Ratchet:

Our remaining Autobots effectively get introduced as a group. Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots, is the only character that really feels solid in every aspect . He’s a transport truck (Peterbuilt-style like in the movies), looks like a combination of his classic cartoon self and the live action movie counterpart , and is thankfully voiced by the only man who can do it right: Peter Cullen. ’nuff said. Bumblebee, complete with digital “squawk box” and movie-esque muscle car look, gives kind of a mixed feel. I can’t fully accept this iteration of him yet , but he doesn’t feel like a bare-knuckled punch in the face of everything that is at least the live action version of Bumblebee that we enjoy. Bulkhead is voiced by a solidly experienced Kevin Michael Richardson, and is essentially the brute of the Autobots, without coming off as a completely brainless twat. Ratchet , the last of our Autobot line-up, was the surprising wildcard. He’s voiced by Jeffrey Combs, Weyoun from Star Trek: Deep Space 9, and Commander Shran from Star Trek: Enterprise. His talents come off as a respectable representation of the teams “medic” and pseudo-tech expert. His design is effectively akin to what you’d expect in a combat medic: Solidly armored.

Megatron:

Our last character to be introduced is the leader of the Decepticons: Megatron. Voiced by the one and only Frank Welker, he sports an appearance somewhat like a cross between his live action design and his Energon design. We never actually see him transform, so his vehicle form remains a mystery for now.

Story:

From what can be discerned by the mini-series, the 6 Autobots remaining on Earth are the last remaining soldier on their side. They base themselves out of a missle silo provided to them by the U.S. government, while the Decepticon’s have a mobile Cybertronian vessel. During the course of the first episode, we learn that Megatron is away from the planet, leaving Starscream in charge to mine energon. Starscream, in his typical egotistical fashion, enjoys the power far too much and fancies himself good enough to take out each Autobot individually, of which his only success turns out to be Cliffjumper.

Like any Transformers show taking place in some modern-day setting, the Autobots meet a few humans that they team up with and protect, which integrates in to the storyline with a moderate amount of precision, if done a little bit sloppy for robots “in disguise.”

Additional Thoughts:

Among a few other things to address is the music, which is actually enjoyable. It sounds like some slightly altered and somewhat simplified versions of a few of the live act ion movie scores. I usually don’t notice music in cartoons, but for Transformers you have to consider all of the aspects an integral part of the show.

Also worth mentioning, is some of the crew of the show. Notably Jeff Kline, exec producer/writer/developer for various other cartoon series including Men in Black, Extreme Ghostbusters, Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles, and Big Guy and Rusty. Also, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who have tag teamed writing and producing on various projects such as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Alias, Transformers (2007), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Fringe, Star Trek (2009) and Xena: Warrior Princess.

Final Thoughts:

Although nothing can truly live up to the legend that is the original Transformers cartoons (and comics), I can comfortably say this is one of the better representations. Most of the voice act ing is solid, and character design is modern and kid-friendly, but with sufficient aspects to please most of the classic fans.

Storyline is a loose collaboration of previous ideas that, although different, does seem to work for the show. Combined with the finer details such as the CGI rendering, and musical scores, the show develops an introductory personality to call its own.

If the show had no predecessors to be judged against, it would definitely carry its weight sufficiently to at tract viewers of all ages.

As this is a two-part mini-series that will lead in to a full show come February of 2011, I am choosing not to provide an actual scorecard at this time.

Sometimes it’s good to look in to the light.

I just finished watching the movie Skyline, and after the plethora of bad reviews people have been giving it over the past couple weeks, that may surprise some of you.

Here’s the thing: People are idiots. But since this isn’t a review of human stupidity (you can read multiples of those in my blog), let’s get back to what matters: Skyline.

I’ll be honest. I’m a sucker for alien invasion movies, because there is so much potential for originality and creativity. Skyline hits on various forms of these.

For one, who the hell in the past has considered something like lights as a means for aliens to “take control?” Much to the ineffective argument of many out there this is equally, if not more so, likely a method of an advanced race gaining control of us. “light” can be used in anything from information transmission, to offensive energy applications (lasers). The eyes are a direct window to the brain, with no in between, and they simply process light. If that’s not a legitimate basis for the hypnotic light in the movie, I don’t know what is.

A pocket of survivors. Well, lets face it people, no everyone is as stupid as most of you who wrote a single sentence review about how “this is the worst movie ever” so frankly, this will always hold potent ial for being possible. The unfortunate part is, we find out at the end with certainty, that the aliens are harvesting humans in order to use their brains in “soldier” bodies and such. This means that they may likely have all of that knowledge at their disposal as well, allowing them to effectively counter any and all strategies, leading to the end result of the movie.

The brain that could not be tamed. In the last few minutes of the movie, we see the end result of the harvesting, where biological machine-like devices tear the head and spinal column from their human bodies, remove the skulls (presumably in one quick move by what we see), than they suck the brains up in to a tube that takes them to a bigger biological machine that sucks them up, and spits them out with a body. We see them take the female lead, Elaine, and bring her up there to examine her belly. As they pin her, and appear to be preparing to surgically remove her unborn child, we see Jarrod’s brain, glowing a bright orange (compared to the bright blue of every one else), get spit out in a brand new body with glowing orange eyes. As he gets his bearings, he can see them preparing to do something to Elaine, and forcefully intervenes, leading to the final scene where he stands up in front of her to protect her from the soon-to-be onslaught.

Granted, I can see how the simple-minded idiots who wrote those other reviews would think this impossible, but they also forget that we use less than 10% of our brain at any given time. That being said, it IS just a movie, where anything is possible. But consider all the variables here. Jarrod experienced the hypnotic light for an extended time twice. After the first, his body had time to process it all, and started to change in a few ways. Nearer to the end, we see a scene where he gets angry and pulls on some of whatever is happening to him to lift Oliver off the ground and essentially tell him to piss off. He spends the two or three days the film takes place across processing that he’s going to be a father, and by the time he and Elaine get taken, his biology has sufficiently changed to alter his brain chemistry, providing the necessary freedom to be in control of his new body.

Frankly, name an alien invasion movie where this happens. Nothing like that in War of the Worlds, or Independence Day, or Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or Battlefield Earth, or Mars Attacks, or The Faculty, or Signs, or The Blob, or ANY Predator movie, or The Arrival, or The Thing. Not in ONE of these movies, did you get a human being turned, infected, twisted, altered, enhanced or any of that , and have them turn on their would-be new masters to help the human race. Does that mean the concept is original? Not really, as any anime that follows suit with something like Guyver or Tekkaman will prove. But this is neither an overdone idea, nor done on the small-scale it’s used on in the past.

Aside from those things, the movie employs a beautiful application of special effects for all sorts of things, from the aliens, to the remote military drones, and even the various combat scenes. The aliens are a healthy mix of both old and new concepts. Oddly enough, they look very humanoid, considering the technology they use, which is either extremely advanced biological engineering, or a crossbreed between biological engineering and some form of nanotech.

All in all, I very much appreciated some different directions with this movie. The lack of the U.S. military “might” being tossed around, or even truly effective, was refreshing. And I find myself laughing at those who suggested the movie had a predictable ending. A predictable ending would be the aliens being destroyed/routed off planet . Based on some of the events throughout , certain finer points of the ending may have been predictable, but the ending as a whole took a quite unique and less-than “happy” ending approach.

My Final Scoring Is:

Directing: 4/5

Writing: 4.5/5

Acting: 4/5

F/X: 5/5

OVERALL: 4.38/5

I’ve just finished watching a 2008 movie called Exam, which classifies as a psychological thriller.

The premise is that 8 candidates for a job have reached the final test , and are given 80 minutes to answer one question, while avoiding disqualification through a few simple rules.

And now the review.

Right from the start , Exam establishes the intent to create a psychological candy shop, repeatedly relying on situations not unlike that of Schroedinger’s Cat, until the candidates start to learn the literal application of the 3 rules, and lack thereof any beyond those.

The invigilator advises them that they may not spoil their paper intentionally or otherwise, they may not at tempt to leave the room of their own intention, and they may not attempt to contact the invigilator, or speak with the guard present in the room. After which, the invigilator simply asks “Are there any questions?” With that, he sets the clock, starts it running and exits.

As in any group of people, there are bound to be different personality types. This movie exploits that factor, relying on the different personality types to play off of each other for better or worse, often worse. The Type A narcissist of the group broadcasts his personality first, by taking not ice of the fact that no rule is in place preventing them from talking with each other, and proceeds to pretend to give the others a choice for things like applying nicknames to everyone and working together in a situation where anyone could have posited these ideas and been agreed upon.

In the progression of the film, we see the candidates get disqualified, either by their own lack of attention to the rules, their lack of attention to detail, or their willingness for various reasons. All the while, building up the psychological endgame.

The movie gives very little information about what the world is like outside of the room this movie takes place in, but what little info it does give provides plenty of details about the candidates, and certain events that pertain to the movie. Chief among these bits of information, is that a pandemic has spread across the planet , primarily infecting people in their younger ages. As it progresses, it causes various progressive symptoms, leading to a coma, and then death. The company our candidates are vying for a posit ion with, is also the company responsible for finding a treatment that holds back the infection.

As much as I found many aspects predictable due to my experience with movies and television, the movie was still able to surprise me with some unique things. One of these was at the end, when one of the remaining candidates is shot in the left side of his chest, As the invigilator is explaining a few things, it comes up whether or not that candidate is dead, and it turns out that the bullet that shot him contained a special pill the company had developed in their search for a cure for the infect ion, that could speed up healing. As this is discussed, the candidate starts to regain consciousness, his would completely healed.

All in all, the movie is not what I would consider a top-notch movie, but when taking in to consideration the budget, story, acting, overall effects (Not of the special kind), I would definitely class this as a much better quality B movie.

I score the movie thusly:

Directing: 4/5

Writing: 4.5/5

Acting: 3.5/5

F/X: 5/5

OVERALL: 4.25/5

Ya know, people make fun of my interests on a regular basis, so I thought I’d address that in my blog.

So here’s the thing, we live in a world where anything really can happen given the right amount of ingenuity, with the wrong amount of common sense, morality, or street smarts. That means that at any given time, we can be facing at least a dozen different apocalypse scenarios. Pretty glum, I know, but for someone like me it only increases my value.

The rest of you, well, you’re all just foot soldiers and baby makers.

Lets say the most likely apocalypse scenario occurs: Nuclear War

Well, first ly, I live in Canada, so no one will nuke us. That increases my survival chances. Now, the first major problem we’ll have is the destruction of many electronics. The electromagnetic pulses sent out by nuclear explosions will fry 90% of any electronics in range, and the world will need competent , knowledgeable people to help rectify that. Besides that, I’m an information sponge, so I’ll have value as a teacher of generations to come. These two things effectively make me a potential asset in a post-nuclear war society. But you, the ones who laugh at all the random knowledge in my head, well you’re only good as foot soldiers and babymakers.

How about another likely scenario: Another Ice Age (If you believe the global warming fanatics)

Well hell, I live in Canada, that adds to our resilience to the cold. Plus there’s all that knowledge again, so I become an asset as a teacher, and “all that there science-y stuff that needs ta be rebuilded.” But again, you who laugh at me are just foot soldiers, and babymakers.

The next fairly unlikely event: Zombie Plague

Well, knowledge helps. The fact that I have a progressively developing and improving plan to defend an entire city helps. Oh, and there’s those countless hours of playing the various different zombie games and watching the various different zombie movies that prepare me for 92% of all possible zombie outbreak scenarios. That helps. But hey, there’s an upside for you guys. You have opt ions this time. You can be a foot soldier, a babymaker, food, or a zombie foot soldier.

How about this one: Robot Revolution

So the robots have made a play for global domination. Well, in all likely possible scenarios for this one, I get to use knowledge, educate people, destroy robots, etc, etc. The rest of you who laugh? You’re foot soldiers, babymakers, or batteries.

My least favourite possibility: Genetic Superhumans

Honestly, in this scenario, I’m fucked. All of that knowledge ain’t worth shit if they deem me too valuable to the human race to let live. I’d have to play stupid, and means I’m just a foot soldier or a babymaker. :S
But hey, on the plus side you guys might be foot soldiers, babymakers, or toys.

Really though, 4/5 possible outcomes put me on top. So I’m confident that the most likely apocalypse scenarios result in me having an even greater purpose. But good for you *pats you on the back*, for being cannon fodder on a battlefield, or cannon fodder in the bedroom. Some body has to do it.

*Raises his glass* To the foot soldiers and babymakers of the world. Laugh it up, while you still can.
